‘Mr Olympia 1980’ The ‘Olympia Fiasco’ by Frank Burwash

This is a reprint of the iconic scathing synopsis of the 1980 Mr Olympia by Frank Burwash.

The article originally appeared in the 6th Issue of Rocco Oppedisano’s “Muscle Australia” in November 1980 as a one page flash report without any photos.   It was short, sharp and to the point.  The article was that good that it was reprinted across the world in numerous “Non Weider” affiliated magazine publications.  As a keen historian of the event I deem this as the most critical piece ever written on the controversial event.

As for the author, Frank Burwash, he was a key figure in the evolution of Australian bodybuilding and was known for his passion and generosity when it came to promoting the sport.  Frank was actually the driving force behind Australia’s first steps onto the international stage.  In 1974, he would pay the way for Roger Walker to compete at the 1974 IFBB Mr Universe.  He would do the same in 1975 and 1976 whereby Walker would ultimately take his Class at the prestigious event.  At the time of this article Burwash was Chairman of Judges for Australian Bodybuilding.

Frank was a straight shooter that didn’t pull any punches.  So very evident in this article.  He was frustrated and furious and made it very clear when he penned this article.

This version of the article is from the May 1981 edition of “Muscle World” and it is accompanied by some magnificent photos of the event from the lenses of both Vince Basile and Robert Nailon.

Enjoy the read!
